In these days I interviewed a boy from the third class of highschool about the experience of learning English at school.
This is the story of “Justme” a boy who is attenting the third year of the Scientific Programme in my school.
Firstly he told me that he enjoys studying English because it’s a really important language because it is universal, so it gives you the opportunity to communicate with the most of the world.
Secondly he said that to learn and improve he usually tries to speak with native speakers or sometimes he watches videos or TV series, although for him it’s also fundamental to make experience abroad and he is planning to go to the US to improve.
In particular he spoke me about his experience of living abroad. He lived in the Czech Republic and there he attended the international school, so he got used to speaking in English with both native and non-native speakers. He said he felt quite comfortable even if he didn’t know some expressions, but he tried to express concepts in his own way. This is important, because you don’t have to stop at the first obstacle if you don't know how to say something, you have to try rephrasing, it doesn’t matter if you make mistakes, it is important to communicate.
He also believes that the best method to learn English is to try and speak with natives, to watch videos, he also listens to a lot of English music or TV programs he likes in order to learn some useful words. For example he usually watches films with subtitles when the film is difficult to understand but also to learn new phrases and collocations.
However JustMe believes that mastering grammar is really important, even if he said that it’s a little difficult for him, but he also reckons the importance of grammar in order to write properly. Despite this he said he has never had problems understanding people speaking .
